1.
Juan Morel
Campos (1857-1896)
Biography
Juan Morel Campos was a prominent
Puerto Rican composer who was strongly influenced by Italian musicians performing
in Puerto Rico. He received national recognition for his danzas (musical genre originating in Ponce), for which he wrote
over 300.
His studies centered on harmony,
counterpoint, composition and piano, and served as the primary baritone player
in a battalion band from San Juan known as the Cazadores de Madrid. His
background in the baritone contributed to the development of Puerto Rican dance
music ensembles in which the clarinet and baritone horns are the prominent
instruments.
Many of his musical pieces are still
widely played throughout Latin America.
His passing in 1896 was due to a stroke occurring during one of his
performances.

3. Manuel
Gregorio Tavảrez (1843-1883)
Biography
Manuel
Gregorio Tavảrez was a composer and music educator born in San Juan, Puerto
Rico. As a child, Tavảrez took piano and
organ lessons prior to travelling to France in 1856 to study with D’Albert and Auber at the Paris Conservatoire. After coming down with an illness while in
Paris that left him partially deaf and slightly paralyzed in one hand, Tavảrez
returned to Puerto Rico where he settled in Ponce.
For the
remainder of his life, Tavảrez dedicated his time to teaching and composing
music. He was in part, responsible, for
the development of several famous composers and musicians such as Morel Campos and Francisco Cortés and the
pianist-composer Gonzalo Núñez.
He founded the Puerto Rican school of composition and pioneered
pianistic danza as salon music,
resulting in approximately 40 pieces.
While all his works centered around the piano, he composed waltzs and
opera fantasies.
